The ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) qualification is for learners whose first language is not English. It was developed due to demand for a better level of basic English qualifications. This qualification is ideal for those who are preparing for entry to higher education or professional employment in the UK or other English speaking countries.

Why ESOL
ESOL Benefits
English is the official language of 53 countries and is spoken by over 400 million people worldwide. It is a truly global language and is the bridge language for business, tourism and countless other sectors.
ESOL is a comprehensive course and covers all areas of the English Language. It’s not just for conversational use, but for use within the workplace. With an ESOL qualification, you will be confident in your English abilities, no matter the situation.
The Qualification Explained
ESOL International qualifications are designed to reference the descriptions of language proficiency in the Common European Framework Reference for Languages (CEF). The levels in the CEF have been mapped to the levels in the Regulated Qualifications Frameworks for England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Qualification Structure
There are no formal entry requirements for learners undertaking the qualifications. Classes are delivered over approximately 300 hours for each level. All of these hours are guided learning hours, under supervision by your EdifyEllo tutor. To gain the ESOL qualification, learners must take four mandatory units of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Learners may achieve certification for all units.
Curriculum Topics
A selection of topics that could be covered include:
Self and family | Your home | Own local area | Education | Free-time interests | Entertainment | Travel | Personal relationships | Health and hygiene | Going shopping | Food and drink | Public services | Places | Weather | Measures and shapes
At Advanced levels additional topics could include:
News and politics | Local and national affairs | International issues
It should be noted that the complexity of the topics will increase in line with the level of study. At all levels, learners must be able to demonstrate telephone conversation and letter-writing conventions. Have a chat with our team if you require any specific topics covered and we can customise the curriculum to fit your needs.
Certification
Results and certificates are usually issued within 8 weeks of the final examination. All exams are externally set and marked. Speaking examinations are assessed using an interlocutor appointed and trained by awarding body, NOCN. This is conducted one to one. The interlocutor will be a suitably qualified and experienced English teacher. Exams are task-based and linked to real-world situations.
Awarding Body
NOCN has been providing accreditation to ESOL providers across the UK and internationally for over 25 years and is proud of its reputation as, “a provider of fully accessible, trusted and flexible accreditation services”.
Over the years, NOCN has worked effectively with our centres for the benefit of learners across the country; with a mutual interest in providing a continuously improving service.
